Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis)

Hatched in 2007, this is a new species of bird to fly and work at the centre. The mother to 'Ferris' used to be a flying bird at the centre.

IN THE WILD

The Ferruginous Hawk (also known as Ferruginous Rough-legged Buzzard or Ferruginous Buzzard) is the largest member of the Buteo genus. 

Origin: Western parts of USA and southwest Canada. Migratory in northern parts of range to southwest USA and Mexico in winter.

SPECIES FACTFILE

LENGTH: 50-66cm

WINGSPAN: 134-152cm

WEIGHT: 980g - 2.0 kg

EGGS IN CLUTCH: 3-5

Diet: Mainly small to medium sized mammals of open grasslands (rabbits, hares, prairie dogs and other ground squirrels), some birds, also reptiles (including snakes), amphibians and large insects.

Habitat: Plains, prairies, desert uplands and other dry open country.
