Our brand new Countryside Birds of Prey Experience is a unique opportunity to take a walk in the rolling Shropshire hills in the company of two of our Harris Hawks and an experienced falconer as your guide. You will follow the birds wherever they fly, taking in picturesque scenery while watching these birds explore and perhaps even hunt in their natural environment. You will learn all about these birds and any wildlife you may encounter on your journey. This is not a 'hands on' experience, but offers an amazing chance to watch these birds in free flight exhibiting natural behaviour. There may be the occasion to have a bird fly to you and land on your gloved hand, and/or you may be privileged enough to see the birds hunt and chase prey, if they choose to! Your experience will finish with the thrill of seeing one of our falcons in free flight over the hillside.
Group sizes will be strictly limited to a maximum of 3 participants and costs only £60 per person. This experience is suitable for persons aged 14+ but please note that under 18's MUST be accompanied by a full-paying adult.
This experience starts at 10am; you will meet your guide at a location to be agreed closer to the time, in or around Craven Arms, Shropshire. You will not be meeting at The Falconry Centre itself, as it is about an hour's drive away! Your falconer will give you a brief introduction and then escort you in a 4x4 vehicle up into the hills, where your walk will commence. The Experience will last for at least two hours but please allow up to three, as it may depend on how far from the vehicle the birds lead you! You will require a good degree of physical fitness and stamina, as there is no set route - you will be following the birds wherever they choose to fly, which may involve climbing over gates and fences and navigating rough, rural terrain. As such we regret that this experience is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility - if you are not certain this experience is suitable for you, please consider either our Half Day or Owl Hour Bird Handling Experience instead.
This experience will only be run on set dates and is very weather permitting - please telephone us on 01562 700014 no less than 48 hours before your experience to discuss your options if the weather forecast looks bad.
Please note that the birds flown on this Experience are trained hunting birds - there is a chance that they may pursue and/or catch prey (such as rabbits or pheasants). We do not guarantee that this will happen, but if this is something that you do not wish to see, then please consider booking one of our other Bird Handling Experiences instead. You should also be aware that there will be no toilet facilities, as this Experience takes place out in the countryside!
Frequently asked questions about our Countryside Experience
How often do you run the Experiences and how far ahead do I need to book a date?
This experience is only run on set dates during the winter months. Dates are published on this page and can only be booked online.
I have paid online, how long does it take to receive the voucher?
We will email the voucher to you within 2 days of the payment. If you have requested a printed voucher, please allow at least 7 days for delivery.
How many participants are in a group?
We limit this experience to a maximum of 3 participants - this is because this is the maximum we can accommodate in the 4x4 vehicle used to access the area up in the hills where the experience takes place.
Is this Experience suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility?
We regret that this experience is not suitable for wheelchair uses or those with limited mobility. It takes place in the countryside over rough, rural terrain. There are no set paths as we will be following the birds where they choose to fly. Participants will therefore require a good degree of physical fitness, stamina and some flexibility, as the experience may require climbing over gates and fences to follow where the birds lead. If you are not certain that this Experience is suitable for you or your intended recipient, please telephone us on 01562 700014 and we will be happy to assist you.
Can we take photographs?
Participants on our bird handling experiences are welcome to bring their own camera/ video cameras to take photographs during their time with us. Flash is also not a problem for the birds.
Can other people come and take photographs?
No - this experience is strictly limited to those who are participating as it is less 'hands on' than our Bird Handling Experiences, and therefore there is no need for observers to come and take photographs. Only those who have paid to participate will be permitted to join the experience.
What happens if the weather is bad on the date of my experience?
This experience is very weather permitting, so please check the weather forecast in advance. If the weather does look to be bad, please telephone us at least 48 hours before the date to discuss your options.
What would we need to wear?
We recommend dressing appropriately for the weather and bringing along a waterproof coat. As we will be out in the countryside, we recommend wearing long trousers and sturdy footwear as the terrain will be uneven and may be overgrown with weeds in some areas.
Where will the experience take place and where will we meet you?
We will contact you before the experience to let you know where to meet us, which will be in or around Craven Arms, Shropshire, as the experience will take place in the Shropshire hills. Please do not come to our visitor centre as this is about an hour's drive from where you should be! Please do not bring along extra people who have not paid to join the experience, as we will not be able to accommodate extra group members - please see above at "can other people come and take photographs?" for further information.
Please choose your preferred date from the options below and fill in the form below your chosen date to book your place. Places are strictly limited to maximum of 3 participants, so please telephone us on 01562 700014 during our opening times if you wish to check how many spaces are available on any given date. Multiple bookings will require you to resubmit the form for each of your participants.
