Children's (Age 6+) Half-Hour Bird Handling Experience

This 30-minute session allows children (aged 6-15 years) the chance to learn about a selection of our smaller birds of prey and owls while holding and flying some of them. This session has been designed specifically for children. They will fly three different birds, usually from a selection of kestrels and small owls, though we never guarantee exactly which birds will be used on the experience. After the experience they are free to walk around the centre and see the rest of our birds and watch other birds being flown in the afternoon.

The Children's (Age 6+) Half-Hour Experience commences at 2:30pm but it is best to arrive before so that you have chance to walk around the centre.

The Children's (Age 6+) Half-Hour Experience costs £15 per child and includes 1 free Adult admission to the Centre.

One adult is admitted free of charge with the child on the experience and any other relatives or friends wishing to watch will be charged the normal admission price on the day of the experience. One adult must be present in the flying arena to supervise the child during the Experience. Only Children participating in the experience will be permitted into the flying arena; any other children present must remain outside the arena and must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Please note: This experience runs only on selected weekdays (Monday to Friday) during the school holidays and on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month from March to October; please call to check availability. We operate on a first-come first-served basis for all dates. Group sizes are strictly limited to a maximum of 6 participants on a weekday and up to 8 at a weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Children's Experiences

How often do you run the Experiences and how far ahead do I need to book a date?

The Children's Experiences run from 2:30pm, Monday to Friday (except Bank Holiday Mondays) during the school holidays, except Christmas Holidays, and on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month from March to October. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis for all dates. To book a date we generally say to book as far in advance as possible, but occasionally we can accommodate people at short notice if places are available. Half-term dates tend to book quickly as they are so short compared to other holiday periods. To book a date please call us on 01562 700014 during visitor centre opening hours.

Can my younger child (age 6-9) do the Children's (Age 10+) One-Hour Experience instead of the Half-Hour?

Our children's experiences are designed to be suitable for the specified age ranges. The Children's (Age 6+) Half-Hour takes place alongside the Children's (Age 10+) One-Hour Experience. Participants on both experiences will start at the same time and fly the same smaller birds together. The children on the Half-Hour will then leave the arena for the One-Hour Experience to continue. If you wish to upgrade a younger child (age 6-9) from the Half-Hour to the One-Hour Experience, then you may be offered this option on the day of the Experience for an additional £15.00. You may also make enquiries with us on the day as to whether this will be possible. However, please be aware that the option to upgrade will be at our discretion and we reserve the right to refuse under any circumstances.

How do I book a specific date?

Unfortunately, there is no way to book a date online, so if you wish to book a date when you purchase the experience, please call us to pay and book the date.

How many participants are in a group?

We limit the Children's Experiences to a maximum of 6 participants on a weekday and up to 8 on a weekend.

Can we take photographs?

Participants and Observers on our bird handling experiences are welcome to bring their own camera/ video cameras to take photographs during their time with us. Flash is also not a problem for the birds.

What happens if the weather is bad on the date of my experience?

We will run the experiences in most weather conditions, but we also want you to enjoy your experience. If the weather is predicted to be bad before your booked date, you can rearrange a new date.
